Chat Sounds and Archive

Mood: Stiff
Tags: Development
Site Version: 3.4
There are a number of enhancements in this update, mostly to the chat interface. First and foremost, network sites now support sound. Web sites that play sound are notoriously obnoxious, so even though sounds are enabled by default (you can change this in your preferences page), the only sound implemented thus far has to be turned on. This sound, which will play whenever another user chats, is useful if you want to keep up with the chat without constantly viewing the page, perhaps on a slow day.

The second big change is the addition of a chat archive. There is an implicit promise that the chat across the 4LN sites would not be archived, so in the future if the archiving is turned on, users will only be able to search back to the time when the option is set. Users also won't be able to view archives from before they joined. Currently, no active site has the archive enabled, but admins can turn it on if they wish.

That's not all, though. The "active users" count has been replaced by a new count, "users viewing," which includes users that aren't logged in as well as any that are anonymous. Bots are not well-filtered at this point, and I will be tweaking this option in the future. There have also been a few enhancements for use in maintenance and new feature development, but those aren't very interesting from a user's perspective.

Version 3.4 Update Notes
Version 3.4 Update Notes
General Changes
• Added a chat archive site option (see below for details).
• Added a user option to allow the site to play sounds. This option is on by default, but individual sounds must be activated to play. If turned off, the sound interface will not even be loaded, and sounds will be unavailable across the site.
• Added an optional sound when other users post to the chat. If sound is enabled, a speaker icon next to the "chat" button will toggle these sounds on and off. This setting is saved between sessions.
• The "active user" count has been changed to "users viewing," and counts all users, whether logged in, anonymous, or visiting the site without logging in.
• Added a dev database for administrator use, allowing for more flexible maintenance and testing.

Bug Fixes
• Users are no longer shown the link to ignore themselves when viewing their own profile.
• Ignoring users will no longer cause you to see extra lines of chat when the chat room has little recent activity.

Chat Archive
• Sites may now include a chat archive, which allows users to view chat even after 36 hours. The archive dates back to when the chat archive option was enabled for the site, but not before the current user was activated. Users must log in to use the chat archive.
• The ability to use the chat archive has been added as an assignable user right.
• The default chat archive page is divided by months. Each day shows how many lines of chat are available under the currently selected filters, and how many lines match the search expression (if applicable).
• Clicking on a date shows all filtered chat for that day, in a format similar to the main chat window. When searching, search terms are highlighted in the chat text.
